The Narrative:
Uetliberg is an atmospheric study of memory, elevation, and the quiet theatre of nature.
The painting is born from the artist’s personal encounter with Zurich’s defining peak, the Uetliberg. While traveling in Switzerland, she made the ascent up the mountain on a late autumn morning—a time of year when Zurich is notoriously blanketed in a dense, impenetrable layer of fog. Yet, upon reaching the summit, the world broke open. She found herself standing above the clouds, looking down at a vast, silent sea of mist that had swallowed the city below, leaving only the rugged, frost-tipped peaks piercing through the veil.
This artwork is not merely a topographical map of a Swiss mountain; it is a translation of that specific, breathless moment of ascension. The canvas captures the "Nebelmeer" (sea of fog) phenomenon with a masterful restraint. Using a delicate palette of bruised purples, icy whites, and deep forest greens, the artist renders the mist not as an empty space, but as a living, moving entity that embraces and obscures the treeline.
The subtle integration of gold leaf within the frosted canopy of the pines elevates the landscape from a literal depiction to a spiritual one. The gold catches the ambient light, mimicking the exact moment the alpine sun breaks through the heavy winter fog. By dissolving the rigid boundaries of the mountain into soft, impressionistic strokes, the artist invites the viewer into a state of quiet reflection—reminding us of the peace that can only be found by rising above the noise of the world.
Curator’s Note:
Uetliberg possesses a remarkable dual nature: it is both deeply grounding and wonderfully ethereal. The artist has captured a difficult atmospheric condition—the heavy, shifting weight of mountain fog—and rendered it with striking poetic grace. The rich plum and lavender tones of the underbrush offer a warm counterpoint to the glacial whites, ensuring the piece feels inviting rather than cold. In a modern interior, this painting functions as a visual exhale; its soft, unfocused edges and subtle golden shimmer provide a sanctuary of calm, drawing the viewer’s eye upward into the light.
